04/30/05 Natalie's 3rd Cousin's 1st Communion:

I went up to Connecticut with Natalie to visit her 3rd cousin's first communion, which is apparently, a fairly big deal to Catholics. I was looking forward to getting a chance to meet a few of the members of one of Natalie's family tree branches.

We had to go up in "Bar-Mitzvah attire" and Peter bequeathed me his "old" suit. It's a perfectly wonderful suit jacket and pants, but Peter has moved on. And for some unknown reason, it fits me perfectly!

I just don't fit it.

We took the opportunity to take some "dressed up" photos of ourselves on Natalie's deck.

The scene at the First Communion:

Natalie was a pious audience member.

It was a cute church, architecturally speaking.

We all went to the cousin's house, where there was a brief prayer in a circle before the eating and the talking got into full swing.

It was more informal than it looks. I mean.... I was there, taking a photo at the time! It couldn't have been too serious! (Could it?) It was like saying "Grace" before a meal.

I have to say... everyone I got to speak with in the entire family in attendance, was brilliant. They all had amazing jobs or did amazing or smart things, and the conversations were all really engaging. It wasn't that I was expecting them to be dopes or low-lifes... but I din't expect to have such a good time in a room full of people that I didn't know. They all took an earnest interest in what I do for a living (both things), and they all conversed readily about things that they did that were interesting to me! I hope to get a chance to hang out with this wing of Natalie's family tree again! Maybe at the Bar-Mitvah?  :)
